[Mock] Press Release: Disney’s Mulan
In theme with Disney’s recent adaptations of beloved animated classes, Walt Disney Studios is releasing a live-action “Mulan” movie. The new “Mulan” is directed by Niki Caro, a female director critically acclaimed for her films “Whale Rider” and “The Zookeeper’s Daughter”. The screenplay was crafted by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Elizabeth Martin, and Lauren Hynek, and is inspired by the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan” by Guo Maoqian, as well as Disney’s 1998 “Mulan” by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. Viewers should not expect the new “Mulan” to be a direct translation of the original Disney animation. Instead, “Mulan” will introduce new storylines, villians, and love interests for Hua Mulan. The film will also feature all new music written by Harry Gregson-Williams.
Logline: In Imperial China, the Emperor has declared war against a tribe of Northern invaders, and each family must send one male to fight. Hua Mulan, the eldest of two daughters, joins the war effort, disguised as a man, to protect her disabled father from combat. Under the alias Hua Jun, Mulan must train and fight in the Imperial Army against seasoned warriors and evil witches to save her country. In a fresh take on the animated classic, Mulan uses her incredible strength, along with the help of her new friends and ancestors, to bring honor to her family and save China.
The role of Hua Mulan will be played by Yifei Lie (“The Forbidden Night”, “Ip Man 3”). “Mulan” will also feature Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. Produced by Walt Disney Studios in collaboration with Jason T. Reed Productions and Good Fear, “Mulan” is set to release in the United States on March 27, 2020.
